There isn’t an officially implemented recycling program in Tegucigalpa. Homes throw everything in the garbage. It then gets”dumped” in the city garbage dump. There is a whole impoverished community that has built up around the dump. Hundreds (maybe thousands) of “houses”. The main source of “income” for these families come out of the trash. The Compassion centre “House of Diamonds” is located in this “dump-community”. Joselin’s Mom and Dad work at the dump – going through the trash looking for valuables and pulling out items that can be recycled. What they find is then brought out to a collection station at the edge of the highway and they receive a small financial compensation for the items they have gathered. The video below shows this collection of recycled materials.
